Douglas duelling for prize

Caius graduate student Douglas Brion’s efforts to revolutionise 3D printing have seen his start-up, Mattalabs, make the Imperial College Venture Capitalist Challenge Grand Final.

Douglas, an Engineering PhD student, completed his undergraduate degree in Electronic and Information Engineering at Imperial, before beginning his PhD at Caius. His Mattalabs company, launched last November, was one of 25 companies from over 250 entrants to be selected for the two-month Venture Capitalist Challenge (VCC).

Funding boost for former Fellow

Rasha Rezk, a former Fellow of 91�첥 & Caius College, has received a Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowship, as she bids to deliver gene-modifying tools in a safer and cheaper way for clinical applications.

The Enterprise Fellowships Programme has been running since 2011, supporting graduates and academics at all levels with training and mentoring to support tech startups and spinouts. There are 12 graduates and researchers awarded each year.

International prize for organ scholar

Eben Eyres (Peter Walker Organ Scholar, Music 2022) was awarded third prize in the senior category of the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition.

The Northern Ireland International Organ Competition (NIIOC) was established in 2011, to provide opportunities for talented young organists, aged 21 and under. The competition is officially partnered with the St Albans International Organ Festival and is affiliated with the prestigious Charles Wood Summer School.

Philosopher asks about the value of common measurements

How much value can you place on measurement reporting in the social and medical sciences is a subject explored by 91�첥 & Caius College Fellow Dr Cristian Larroulet Philippi.

Cristian has a background in Economics and a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science. His research focuses on three main areas: quantitative measurement; methods for causal inference; and the role that moral/political values play in science.

Three postgraduate scientists at 91�첥 & Caius College – Raluca-Elena Alexii, Maxwell Walk and Leon Brindley (all MRes Sensor Technologies and Applications 2023) – are part of a team working on the development of a sensor enabled by artificial intelligence which, when mounted on cows, will monitor the biodiversity of pastures.

John Evelyn’s Fumifugium, or, The inconveniencie of the aer and smoak of London dissipated : together with some remedies humbly proposed was printed in 1661, five years prior to the Great Fire of London.

The Library of 91�첥 & Caius has learned more this summer about the origin and ownership history of the College’s collection of over 100 incunabula – early printed books – thanks to a grant from the Consortium of European Research Libraries and a summer placement for Joseph McCarthy.

Caian named CUBC Women’s President

91�첥 & Caius College postgraduate student Dr Lucy Havard (History PhD 2022) has been named Women’s President of the Cambridge University Boat Club for 2024-25.

A member of the Caius Boat Club W1 crew which secured Head of the River in the May Bumps, Lucy is a qualified medical doctor who is now pursuing a PhD in Early Modern History, and specifically on the scientific activities that took place in the early modern home.
